October is Fire Prevention education month. YCS is very fortunate to have our local volunteer fire departments dedicated to sharing fire safety education with our students. Today, volunteer firefighters from York, Leicester, and Cuylerville Fire Departments visited our school. They presented fire safety tips to our students, familiarized them with how a firefighter may look if they showed up at their home in an emergency, and explained the different types of firefighting equipment. Thank you to the firefighters who came to York Elementary School today and all the local firefighters who protect our homes and families. See all the photos on our Facepage page @yorkgoldenknights

Fall is a fun time at local farms. Our first grade classes had a wonderful day at Duvall Farms in Bloomfield. Special thanks to Kim Duvall and her staff for hosting all our first graders! Everyone enjoyed the Pumpkin Palace and all the activities. Students went on a hayride, picked sunflowers and pumpkins, navigated the corn maze, enjoyed a pony ride, and petted all the animals! They also enjoyed the bounce house and exploring all the different picture locations. It was beautiful weather for our picnic lunch. Afterward, we stopped at Sharks for ice cream. Fall is a fantastic time of year!

Go West, young man! A famous quote from the mid-1800s when Americans were encouraged to move westward in search of opportunity - and gold, which became knows as the California Gold Rush. Mr. Chatley's eighth grade Social Studies students are learning about this time period in American history. As a class activity, the students made paper gold nuggets. The instructions were to hide their name within the drawing. Mr. Chatley grouped the gold nuggets together and the students had to locate their own, simulating the search for gold. The students participated in activities related to homesteading and the transcontinental railroad as part of the unit on westward expansion.

DNA is widely used in law enforcement investigations , medical diagnostics, agriculture, and many other areas. Mrs. Brubaker's Living Environment students participated in a lab, creating simple DNA models using Twizzlers, marshmallows, and toothpicks to represent the components of DNA. Twizzlers act as the sugar-phosphate backbone, while marshmallows represent the four nucleotide bases, and toothpicks simulate the bonds between them. The activity provides a hands-on way to understand the structure of DNA and how it forms a double helix, ending with the fun reward of eating the model.
