The York Central Transportation Department has a fleet of 19 buses and employs 20 full and part-time drivers along with four full and part-time attendants.

We travel about 300,000 miles per year. This is a combination of our regular bus runs, day trips, and sports runs. We also have 4 parochial school and 7 special education runs.

The safety of our students is our utmost concern. With everyone's support, we can continue to safely transport our precious cargo to and from school.

HOW TO BECOME A SCHOOL BUS DRIVER

  • Pass a written test at DMV for a CDL class B permit with an air brake and passenger endorsement.

  • Fill out an employment application and civil service questionnaire. Return these along with three character/driving reference letters from people not blood-related.

  • Pass a CDL physical given by the school physician.

  • Have a clean driving abstract (3-year record)

  • Be approved by the School Board to train for your license.

After passing your driving test:

  • Be approved by the School Board to be a substitute bus driver.

  • Pass a drug test.

  • Be fingerprinted for DMV and FBI.

  • Within the first year of employment, you must attend a 30 hour Basic Course.

  • Each year after, you must attend two 2 hour refresher classes.

  • Pass the yearly CDL physical.

  • Pass random drug/alcohol testing.

  • Complete an annual driver record an interview, annual defensive driving test and have a satisfactory driving abstract.

  • Every 2 years, you need to complete an oral/written test, physical performance test and a behind the wheel driving test.

All these items will be done by a 19-A Certified Examiner and/or a School Bus Driver Instructor. Failing some of these requirements can lead to you being suspended from driving until these items are corrected.

DMV monitors your driving records at all times and will notify your employers of any traffic violations.

Driving a school bus requires a special kind of person. It is one thing to be able to drive the bus, it is another thing to cope with weather, traffic and all those children on the bus that need to arrive safely at their destination.

If you like children, if you like to drive and if you like new challenges, please feel free to stop in at the Bus Garage for additional information and an application for employment. We look forward to seeing you.
