Keeping it real with D.A.R.E.! How do you handle stressful situations? Fifth grade students are about half way through the 10 lesson D.A.R.E. program, taught by School Resource Deputy Kane. Today, Deputy Kane presented a lesson on the topic of stress. The lesson helped the students examine ways in which their bodies experience stress: Feeling frustrated, perspiring, headache, increased heart rate, fear, etc. Students engaged in great discussions about their stress experiences such as taking a test, going to a new school, speaking in front of the class, etc. Deputy Kane helped the students identify their stress reactions and then she followed up with an interactive class discussion identifying ways for students to reduce their stress. For the final activity of the D.A.R.E. lesson the students wrote down the activities that they do enjoy! From the positive interactions between the students, it is clear that they enjoy their D.A.R.E. lessons! Deputy Kane has been teaching the D.A.R.E. program to York Elementary students for 12 years.

York Central School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education! "This is a wonderful recognition for the York school and the community. We appreciate all of the hard work by our extraordinary music department staff, Mr. Vogel, Miss Aroune, Mrs. Daeffler, and Miss Dessert, and the dedication of our talented students. We are very proud of you all and this accomplishment," said Superintendent of Schools David Furletti. To qualify for the Best Communities for Music Education recognition, York School District provided data about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, and support for the music program and community music-making programs. Our data was verified and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. Research into music education shows that educational/cognitive and social skills of children who make music, all benefit from learning an instrument, reading music and singing. Congratulations York CSD music program!

On March 24, 2024, the York All Sports Booster Club organized a fun bowling event at Livingston Lanes for students and staff. The Second Annual Peter's Wing Day & Basket Raffle was a huge success. Several teams of students and staff had an enjoyable Sunday at Livingston Lanes, eating the best chicken wings around and bowling. Several local businesses and individuals donated gift baskets, which went home with the lucky ticket holders. Everyone had a great day and the proceeds benefit the York Central School All Sports Booster Club, which in turn supports and celebrates all York athletic teams and the annual All Sports Booster Hall of Fame award.

For the month of March, York Elementary School celebrated Read Across America. While reading is always the focus of our instruction, we interspersed many new and fun activities into the month to make reading exciting for every student. Each week in March the students watched a masked reader video. Their job was to guess who the masked reader was. Last Friday at our morning assembly, the masked readers were finally revealed to the students! What a surprise! Thank you to our masked readers Miss Earle, Mr. Dougal, Mrs. Michael, Mr. Dunn, and Mrs. Titus. Thank you to our Elementary School Librarian Mrs. Feltham for creating such a fun activity to support reading. What does it matter? Well, it takes up a lot of space! That's what's the matter. Everything around us that has mass and takes up space, has matter. Mrs. Ayers' second graders are learning about matter. In a class demonstration, they learned that even small items like an eraser or a paper clip, have matter. The students made predictions about what would happen if they dropped a small item into a full glass of liquid... do you know the answer? Yes! the liquid may overflow the cup because the item has mass/matter, which takes up space. Great scientific predictions, Mrs. Ayers' class!

The Great North American Total Solar Eclipse is just two weeks away! Are you prepared? Remember - students will be given safe viewing glasses on Thursday. SUNY Geneseo Professor Aaron Steinhauer visited York CSD to speak with students about the total solar eclipse. He presented a lot of good information about the timing of the solar eclipse as well as information on how to safely view the eclipse. Professor Steinhauer created a website that is very informative and includes an interactive map that you can pinpoint where you will be during the eclipse and it will tell you how long the eclipse totality will be. Click the link below to visit his website. https://eclipse.geneseo.edu/ Livingston County also has a great website. Click the link below. https://www.growlivco.com/eclipse
