Who's up for a little Valentine's Day division and BINGO? Mrs. Crane's students!
The students celebrated with a Valentine exchange, Valentine's Day division, and a little BINGO!

Love abounds at York Elementary School, on Valentine's Day and everyday.
Thank you YCS cafeteria for serving a frosted cookie to the students and hats off to the Moms who take those extra moments in the morning to braid a heart into their little one's hair! You are heroes!
Students had a great day exchanging valentines and enjoying some sweet treats.
Our great teachers created lessons around the day so that learning continued and students had a fun day.
Second grade students moved to other classrooms to do activities such as a science experiment using conversation hearts. They also painted charts of hearts!
Elementary School Principal Heather Kent is doing a month-long activity with all grades called, 100 Ways to Care. As students offer ways to care for one another at school and at home, the heart gets added to the hallway display. We already have so many great ways to care for each other! Check out the board. More photos to come!

School Resource Officer Appreciation Day is February 15, 2025.
Since this is our last day before President's Day recess, we will say THANK YOU a day early to our amazing School Resource Deputies Kane and Didas.
We appreciate your daily hellos, fist pumps, high fives, smiles, and of course your efforts to keep our school and campus safe and secure.

On Thursday, February 13, 2025, our Boys Basketball and Cheerleading Teams celebrated their Seniors.
Congratulations to Seniors Liam Ezard, Ethan Hall, and Adam Szczech (Boys' Basketball) and Havyne Wetmore, Teagan Minor, Kaylee Reimer, and thank you for your contributions to York Central School Athletics.

Have you ever been sent on a wild goose chase?
Mr. Chatley's eighth-grade Social Studies students were sent on a digital scavenger hunt today using a program on Ipads called Goosechase.
Students had to locate several posters throughout the school and answer questions about the Great Depression. This activity was a fun way to review the information presented in class, and a great way to get students on their feet!

Wednesday, February 12, was Senior Night for our Girls' Varsity Basketball, and Indoor Track & Field teams.
Congratulations to Seniors Isabel Laney and Rylee Cuozzo (Girls' Basketball), and Haley Miller (Indoor Track & Field). Thank you for your contributions to York athletics over the years.

Students in Mr. Peter Apps Physics class are learning about circuits and the resistance of a wire. Specifically, how much the wire opposes the flow of electric current through it.
Students learned to calculate the wire’s resistance using a formula.
Other students were examining circuits and making claims about the brightness of light bulbs.

Attention York students, families, and community members!

High School students enjoyed a talk with Livingston County Senior Public Health Educator Lisa Kenney during this month's Lunch-N-Learn presentation.
Mrs. Kenney spoke to students about public health careers. From her more than 30 years of experience, she discussed the various aspects of her job, including specializing in community health assessments; and planning and implementing health education programs. She also assesses public health and coordinates with community partners to improve public health.

York Staff Take the Good Life Challenge!
Nine York staff members participated in The Good Life Challenge, a 10-day nutrition event focused around sharpening your mental focus and emotional clarity for peak performance
at work and home.
Participants chose from two meal plan options: A WFPB meal plan (whole foods plant based) or the MIND diet (Mediterranean Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay.)
The Good Life Challenge is offered through Excellus's Employee Wellness Program.
York Central School’s Physical Therapist, Peggy Torpey, coached the group through the 10 days. She provided encouragement and support that made it easy to be successful. Mrs. Torpey sent regular emails, offered recipe websites, and shared her own recipes that she has had success with. She also organized a morning breakfast gathering to share foods from both the MIND and WFPB meal plans.
She says she will continue supporting the staff in their healthy eating and looks forward to the next Good Life Challenge.

Middle School students were encouraged to explore the possibilities when considering their career interests.
Jason Feltham, an engineer with Solar Liberty Energy Systems, talked with middle school students about his unconventional career path that led him to the job he now enjoys.
He started college to study education and become a teacher but quickly realized that was not at all what he wanted to do with his life.
After serving in the military, Mr. Feltham enrolled at Rochester Institute of Technology where he earned his degree in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. He worked at different companies and in different engineering capacities over the years until his most recent job in the solar industry.
Calling all of his experiences along the way, "Opportunities to fill his tool box." Mr. Feltham said all of the changes in his career path were opportunities to learn something new. He encouraged the students to look at their futures in a similar way and to build their own toolboxes.
At the conclusion of his presentation, several students shook his hand and thanked him for his military service and the great information he shared with them.

Just the facts Mrs. Streb, just the facts!
Mrs. Streb's first graders are practicing their skills to become word detectives!
That's right! A box arrived at their classroom labeled CONFIDENTIAL!
The box contained a detective's hat and coat, a magnifying glass, and more clues.
But who is the box from?
Mrs. Streb's first graders are on the case! We will keep you posted.

YORK CENTRAL SCHOOL IS ON A TWO HOUR DELAY DUE TO THE INCLEMENT WEATHER.

Mrs. Shaffer’s Third Graders Virtually Visit with Author for World Read Aloud Day
February 5, 2025, was World Read Aloud Day, an event hosted by LitWorld, a nonprofit literacy organization.
Mrs. Tricia Shaffer’s third-grade class participated in a virtual read-aloud session with New York Times and Bestselling Author Joanna Ho, who has authored 9 children’s books and one novel appropriate for teens.
The author read her book entitled, “We Who Produce Pearls,” along with dozens of classrooms virtually joining from around the world. The book celebrates Asian-American culture and the diverse contributions made throughout history. “We Who Produce Pearls” is wonderfully and colorfully illustrated by artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya.
Students were given the opportunity to read a page from the book out loud and to ask questions of the author who told the students that she didn’t like to write when she was a student. However, she had ideas in her mind that she wanted to share and so she continued writing and got better at it. She encouraged the young students to do the same.
Mrs. Shaffer’s students were very engaged in listening to the story and the discussion with the author.
Scholastic website offers several recorded read-aloud books for children to listen to.

Geneseo Rotary Donated Dictionaries to York Third Graders
Members of Geneseo's Rotary Club visited York Elementary School to present a dictionary to each third-grade student.
Supporting education and literacy is one of the main focuses of Rotary International and Rotary Clubs in the U.S. The Dictionary Project started in 2004 and since then, Rotary Clubs across the nation have presented approximately 28 million third-grade students with a new dictionary to keep for themselves.
Students learned about the guiding principles of Rotary International, also called the Four-Way Test:
1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Thank you to Geneseo Rotary Club and members, Tim, Margie, Patti, and Steve, for visiting with our third-grade classes and presenting them with a dictionary.
